I am a Lai, as we refer to mixed-race people in Vietnam.

The name Tru Lai came to my mind through the play on words True Lie which is an oxymoron and represents the cohabitation of opposites : east and west, restraint and demonstrative manner, dominant and dominated, nowhere and everywhere.

“Tru Lai : Flèches contre balles” (en : “Tru Lai : Arrows against Bullets”) is a musical project embodying the quest for identity of a Lai.

Each track bears an idea regarding this subject : the mark of racial mixing (“Temujin’s Blue Note”), the family history tales (“La boîte à chaussures”), the feeling of being pulled between two worlds (“Entre deux mondes”), the perception of cultural differences between those worlds (“Le jardin de mon père”), the quest (“La Quête”), the fantasized country of origin (“Ice Kem”), the inner conflict (“Flèches contre balles”), the feeling of being at home nowhere and everywhere at the same time (“Chameleon (Song for Baboo”).
